Signing up for Microsoft 365 takes less than ten minutes, and by the end of it you'll have access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, 1 TB of OneDrive storage, and much more. This guide walks you through every step — from visiting the Microsoft website to launching your first app — so you can get productive as quickly as possible.

<Tip>
  You don't need to install anything to get started. All Microsoft 365 plans include free access to the **web versions** of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and other apps at [office.com](https://www.office.com). Simply sign in with your Microsoft account and start working directly in your browser — no download required.
</Tip>

## Before You Begin: What You Need

Before signing up, make sure you have the following ready:

* **A Microsoft account** — this is a free account tied to an email address (e.g. your Outlook, Hotmail, Gmail, or any other email). If you don't have one yet, you'll create it during sign-up.
* **A payment method** — a credit card, debit card, or PayPal account for paid plans. You won't be charged until your free trial ends if you choose that option.
* **A compatible device** — Windows 10/11 or macOS 10.14 or later for desktop apps; iOS 16+ or Android 10+ for mobile apps.

## Step-by-Step: Signing Up for Microsoft 365

<Steps>
  <Step title="Go to the Microsoft 365 website">
    Open your browser and navigate to [microsoft.com/microsoft-365](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365). This is the official Microsoft 365 homepage where you can browse all available plans, compare features, and start your purchase.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose 'Buy now' or 'Try free for 1 month'">
    On the plans page, you'll see pricing cards for Personal, Family, and Business plans. Each card has two options:

    * **Try free for 1 month** — available on most personal and business plans. You'll need to enter payment details but won't be charged until the trial period ends.
    * **Buy now** — skips the trial and starts your paid subscription immediately.

    Click whichever option suits you on your chosen plan.

    <Warning>
      If you start a free trial, make sure you complete your full setup — including installing the apps and activating your subscription — **before the 30-day trial ends**. If you don't cancel before the end of the trial, Microsoft will automatically charge your payment method for the first month or year. Set a calendar reminder so you don't forget.
    </Warning>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Select your plan">
    If you haven't already chosen a plan, you'll be prompted to pick one:

    * **Microsoft 365 Personal** — for one person, up to 5 devices
    * **Microsoft 365 Family** — for up to 6 people, each with their own account and storage
    * **Microsoft 365 Business Basic / Standard / Premium** — for organisations needing business email, Teams, and more

    You can also choose **monthly** or **annual** billing on this screen. Annual billing typically saves you around 15–20% compared to paying month to month.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in or create a Microsoft account">
    You'll be redirected to the Microsoft sign-in page. If you already have a Microsoft account (Outlook.com, Hotmail, Xbox, or any Microsoft service), enter your email and password.

    **If you don't have a Microsoft account yet:**

    1. Click **Create one** beneath the sign-in form.
    2. Enter an email address you'd like to use (or click **Get a new email address** to create a free Outlook.com address).
    3. Create a strong password.
    4. Enter your name and date of birth.
    5. Complete the verification step — Microsoft will send a code to your email or phone.
    6. Once verified, your account is created and you're returned to the checkout flow.

    You can also visit [account.microsoft.com](https://account.microsoft.com) directly to create your account before starting the sign-up process.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Enter your payment details">
    On the payment screen, enter your credit card, debit card, or PayPal details. Microsoft accepts all major cards.

    Review the order summary carefully — confirm the plan name, billing cycle (monthly or annual), and the total amount. If you're on a free trial, you'll see a **₀.00 charge today** message and a note about when billing begins.

    Click **Save** or **Place order** to complete the purchase.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm your subscription and activate">
    After payment, Microsoft sends a confirmation email to your Microsoft account address. Open that email and click the confirmation link if prompted.

    You'll then land on the **Microsoft 365 setup page** (or you can visit [office.com](https://www.office.com) and sign in). Here you can:

    * Launch web apps immediately from your browser
    * Download and install the desktop apps for Windows or Mac
    * Get the mobile apps for iOS or Android

    Your subscription is now active. The next section covers installation in detail.
